Summary
Writing to inform her that he has abandoned his efforts to prepare her article intended for October for the press as the sloppy composition and presentation of the text made "intelligible correction or interlineation" impossible; noting that her article for January "gave me much less trouble, & appears well in print", and adding that her manuscripts, much as he values them, "give me a great deal of labor & perplexity in their preparation" and requesting that she "favor" him as much as she is able "in all the details both of style & of chirography"; also suggesting, "as I want to have your connection with the Review permanent", that she "furnish such articles as Americans are interested in", pointing out that "there is in every country a great deal of literature, which has in its very nature only a local interest ... while there is also much which proffers claims on the general mind", and asking that she "give as little of the former & as much of the latter as is possible in your quarterly sketches"; stating that he will probably soon quit his post at the (North American) Review and hopes his successor will form with her the same "relation which I have found so pleasant & so profitable."
