Confirming that he has received her article "The salons of Paris" and that he expects to "have it set up in type in a day or two"; wondering if "the Jack in the box surprise which the Emperor [i.e. Napoleon III has contrived for us" has affected "antipathy to his regime" in England, while reflecting that the salons of Paris are "permanent subjects of interest"; noting that he is publishing some papers entitled "Life in a French kitchen", and referring to them as "a means of deferring my ascent to higher latitudes for a few weeks"; insisting that she not "ascribe the authorship of Eminent men to me"; sending her an uncorrected proof on an article.
