Summary
Sending her an issue of the Examiner newspaper and calling her attention to an article on "the European", as well as a notice the newspaper contains on American poetry; complaining of the dark and gloomy weather in London and the wearisome pace of social life in the city; mentioning Paris and an article that recently appeared in the Revue des deux mondes concerning "Baron Parke's case" and signed "John Lemoine", and noting that an article in the Examiner on the Emperor is well written; commending her for her kindness in hosting the Autrans and asking when Madame de Bury plans on coming to London; commenting on a performance of the Messiah she attended recently at Exeter Hall in which [Julius] Benedict conducted and Jenny Lind sang: "I think her voice is a little stringy & harsh sometimes, but she sings Sacred music with much religious feeling. Benedict does not conduct well at all, & I greatly prefer Costa..."; asking if she has read [George Henry] Lewes' Life of Goethe and stating that it is worth reading.
