Summary
Writing about Father Mathew's recent public appearances (a sermon, followed by an event in which he administered the temperance pledge to large numbers of people); describing events that took place in the crowd and speeches that were given; saying thar the crowd was so tightly packed that he saw "my plump brother Charles reduced almost to a wafer"; saying that numerous noblemen took the pledge; describing the predicament two brewers found themselves in when they tried to carry barrels of beer through the crowd; writing at length about how enthusiastically Father Mathew was received.
