Notes
Date inferred from content. Ruskin traveled to London in March 1880 to lecture at the London Institute. Ruskin has given the heading "Saturday" and March 20 would have been the Saturday the week before Easter in 1880. The year "1881", which has been inscribed on the first page of the letter, could not have been the year of writing, as Ruskin would have been in Brantwood rather than London, was not publishing new numbers of Fors Clavigera, and had stopped working on the Turner Cataloge.
The "Turner Catalogue" referred to in the letter is Ruskin's Catalogue of the Drawings and Sketches by J. M. W. Turner, R. A., at present exhibited in the National Gallery. Revised and Cast into Progressive Groups, with Explanatory Notes.
Provenance
Gordon N. Ray.
Summary
Ruskin has just seen (William) Ward and is surprised that Allen has not referred to him about the new Turner Catalogue. "He certainly must have some pieces of knowledge that would be useful." Wanted to head straight home (to Brantwood) next week, but as Easter ends it, think now it will be better to stay to get that catalog off hand. Asks Allen to send duplicate with questions, as he left his behind in Brantwood. Says the new Fors (Clavigera) came out nicely. In postscript, says that he hopes Grace and Allen got home well and asks for two more numbers of Fors.
