Summary
Recounting a pleasant visit with "the Aumales" (i.e. Duke of Aumale and his family), including their son, the Prince de Condé (Louis Philippe Marie Léopold d'Orléans); writing that her daughters have chosen to prolong their stay in Scotland, where they "find themselves so well in that fine air", describing the desire on the part of one of her daughters (probably Gertrude Fitzpatrick) to commit herself to "one of superior mind and attainments - live in his fame & promote his success by every possible means" and expressing her opinion that her daughter is well suited for "one of those higher order of spirits who require above all people a wife & a home in the fullest meaning of those two great words - which in their realization imply so much"; giving thanks that she is no longer subject to the intense and "changeable moods" of youth and stating that she experiences "much more enjoyment & infinetely less suffering" in her maturity; commenting on the beauty of the surrounding country, mentioning a day trip to Curraghmore (the seat of the Marquess of Waterford) and reflecting on the death of Lord Waterford and the transience of life; mentioning mutual acquaintances and an article in the Edinborough Review on Marie Antoinette, remarking on the "enlightened, liberal & well educated" qualities (of the current heir of the House of Orléans) but allowing that "he may have none of the essential qualities of a leader or administrator".
