Gifford (probably William Gifford, editor of the Quarterly Review); writing "It is of course a great object with me, in my first venture, to stand well with all parties"; adding, with underlining for emphasis, "Do not on any account mention my name to any body, as it may prove injurious to me, being a professional man"; mentioning that he has written to W. Blackwood (probably William Blackwood) enclosing Jerdan's letter: "It is very kind of you to take any trouble on my behalf."
