Thanking her for her "most interesting letters"; mentioning the trouble Madame de Bury has taken "in the matter of my little private affairs", the thought of which vexes her more than "the present failure of my plan"; saying that they will be in London soon, but that she is afraid "there will not be much peace or pleasure for Ld. E. during the present state of affairs, particularly Chinese affairs! It is too sad a disappointment, & a fearful trial to his courage & hopefulness."
