Summary
Expressing his regret at having missed seeing her in London, saying that there are "sundry matters, concerning which I would rather have spoken than written", and remarking "That China business, as you may believe, has been a great distress to me - and I am afraid that I shall have a good deal more annoyance about it before it is all over ... I could tell you more in reference to this matter than I care to put on paper"; adding that there are other matters he would like to discuss with her, hoping that she will return to London, and sending regards on behalf of Lady Elgin.
