Acknowledging receipt of a book by de Tocqueville, sent by her with her recommendation, and discussing (John William) Kaye's Life of Lord Metcalfe, a copy of which he has sent to her; expressing his admiration for the patience with which Metcalfe endured such great suffering during his governship of Canada, and his "determination with which he persevered in doing what he believed to be right", but giving his opinion that "his system was a failure and a failure because he identified himself too much with the passion of a party".
