Summary
Writing to say that she is "very vexed about [Ernst] Haberbier" over his conduct with money and his "extraordinary mendacity" and the "audacious falsehoods in wh. I have myself detected him"; recounting some of the lies he has told, stating that she does not believe that he is as destitute as he claims to be, reporting that he has been driving "about the town in a smart Brougham" and that she believes that "he never had any idea of giving a concert"; concluding that "he is a humbug" and informing Madame Blaze de Bury that she cannot see him, adding by way of explanation, "I would do so if I were a free woman but I am not - the fact is that I have a good deal more liberty than most people of my age who are unmarried but there are some things wh. I cannot do - I told you the sort of prejudice my people have against artists - I sh. get into an irremediable scrape with all of them my brother at the head if I were to see much of him"; saying that she has told no one of this but Mr. Cooke and promising to recommend Haberbier and promote his talent, although she cannot see him; complaining that London is growing hot, asking after Mrs. (Anne) Dunbar, and remarking that the world divides its interests between "the camp at Chobham - the chances of a general war - table turning - and spirit rappings", asking if she plans to go to Brougham in the autumn and saying that she might visit the nieghborhood; asking her if she knows "M. de Sant attache to the F. Embassy " in London and saying that she wishes to know "everything abt. him - as to his family and antecedents" as he has "furiously compromised one or two married women here" and is now pursuing a friend of hers who does not reciprocate his interest; informing her that Lady Alice Lambton is going to marry Lord Aberdour.
