Notes
The letter is simply dated "Monday Night" but the reference to Dobson's "Fielding" suggests it may be 1883 as Dobson's Fielding was published as part of the "English Men of Letters" series under the editorship of John Morley.
Three additional items were part of this acquisition, MA 2662.1, Henley's autograph manuscript of a draft written for Henley's proposed edition of "Works of Byron", MA 2662.2, a collection of 22 cabinet card photographs and MA 2662.4, an autograph letter from Henley to F. P. Barnard concerning a Barnard manuscript. See individual records for details.

Summary
Concerning Dobson's "Fielding;" saying "I saw the Great Editor this afternoon, & got four-fifths of a promise of the forthcoming 'Fielding.' It is therefore advisable to keep the fact of any interest you may allow me to have in the book entirely secret. N'est-cé pas vrai? Think of Mrs. Gamp, & I know you'll agree;" adding, in a postscript, "An art-note on your Athenaeum book will greatly oblige."
