Notes
Title from title page.
Album consisting of hand colored wood engraved illustrations with text and foliation supplied in manuscript, and the decorative borders a combination of woodcut and hand drawn designs; the first leaf of the album, bearing the date "l'an 1623", and first nine entries bearing the arms of Henri III and the Cardinals de Bourbon, de Guise, de Biragrre, de Lenoncourt, de Gondy, as well the Evesques de Langres, de Bayeux and df Auxerue, are all hand drawn facsimiles executed on twentieth century paper; the remainder of the album is executed on paper with grape watermarks probably dating from the middle to late seventeenth century, with the hand coloring and illumination dating from that era.
Copies of the woodcut heraldic designs and cartouche border appeared, with the addition of letterpress title-page, table of contents, introductory text, pagination, and running titles, in: Les Noms, Surnoms, Qualitez, Armes et Blasons de tous les Princes, Seigneurs, Commandeurs, Chevaliers, & Officiers de l'Ordre & Milice du benoist sainct Esprit, depuis la première intitution jusques à présent (A Paris : chez Pierre Lamy, en la grande salle du palais, au second pillier, 1643); attributed to François La Fleiche; with a subsequent edition of the work issued by Lamy in 1644. An album similar to the volume in the Morgan Library's collection, with the woodcuts hand colored, lacking all letterpress additions, and combined with manuscript text and hand drawn borders, is held by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Français 2769), and includes an ornate hand colored manuscript title-page reading: Recueil de tous les chevaliers de l'ordre du Saint Esprit, depuis l'institution jusques en la presente année mil six cens trente un, avec les armoiries ... le tout recueilly et mis en ordre par le Sr [Claude Antoine] DE VALLES, de la ville de Chartres, en Beauce. A Paris, 1631.
