Notes
This letter is one of twenty-six letters from Henley to Anne Boyle written during their courtship in 1876 and 1877 (MA 1617.551 - MA 1617.576). Henley married Anne Boyle on January 22, 1878.
The letter is undated however Henley refers to Rhoda Broughton's new novel, "Joan" which was published in 1876.

Summary
The opening pages of the letter are missing; saying "B. [Robert Glasgow Brown] promised me "Joan", Miss Broughton's new novel. If he send it, it will be an hours reading for a certain person;" reminding her of her promise to write to him and expressing his doubts that he will be able to visit her; discussing a watch he has taken to be repaired and expressing concern that she is not taking proper care of herself; asking that she see that his mother sees a "good" dentist and closing with an explanation of the "X' in his good-bye as the kisses he wishes to give her.
