Summary
Apologizing for not having written, explaining that "Eleanor's state" has been keeping them all in suspense over the expected arrival of her child (presumably referring to her sister-in-law, Mary Eleanor Caldwell), and remarking that her brother (Henry Caldwell) is on his way from Portland and that she "should be vary glad if he found all her troubles over."; commenting on Madame de Bury's difficult voyage and hoping that her cough was not aggravated by the sea air; thanking her for copying out inscriptions from the tombstones of family members in France; saying that (her brother) Charles has been ill but is now improving, that her uncle is also getting better and has sent them a turkey, that there has been "gay doings" at Killyleagh Castle "given by a club of which Archibald is a member", and remarking that the affair was "rather inopportune in the present situation" as the eldest daughter was not yet presentable; describing a lively and amusing letter she received from a young woman who was not permitted to join the festivities but succeeded in recording accounts of the event the following morning; informing her that she has sent the "Mde Récamier" and the" Monde illustré" to her uncle; commenting on the differences between the French and English newspapers and asking that she send them the occasional paper (from France).
