Summary
Saying "I am here till Thursday with the 'Markiss [Marquess of Salisbury].' To 35 Park Lane on Thursday & to Chief Secretary's Lodge, Phœnix Park on Friday. The 'Markiss' is flourishing but has not, so far, questioned me on affairs of State. I propose - emboldened by the bottle - to board him after dinner tonight. I am longing for my Ker. Shall I succeed in beguiling you to Dublin during me reign? I wonder. It ought to be done. You must see Sancho Panza on his island. Meanwhile I have my hands full & expect wigs on the green when the House meets. The Gov't of Ireland is a cross between the modern Gov't of India & the Gov't of an Italian State in the XIIIth century. I am there as a sort of Chibelline Duke, holding an outpost recalcitrant to the idea of Empire & populated by Guelphs. And the [illegible] of the Bianchi & Neri are a joke to the [illegible] which I seek to compose. But I misdoubt me if any number of my subjects will contribute the 'flagellants' & come crying for an end to disorder."
