Summary
Saying "I have read Mrs. Stevenson's story but I am sorry to say that I do not think it quite suitable for The Cornhill. Stories of that kind are rather dangerous as they come very close to the ridiculous unless perfectly successful. I do not think that this is exactly ridiculous but I can't say, either, that I think it perfectly successful. It would do very well for editors who deal in Christmas numbers; but that is not my line. Of course, if you say anything to Mrs. Stevenson, I do not mean you to quote the above but simply to state that I did not feel able to accept it."
