Summary
Confirming that he has posted her letters, informing her that the Fanny (du Quaire) and her husband Henri are staying with the Ogles in Northumberland, that (Walter) Mantell (also known as "Matara") is still in London and plans to sail (for New Zealand) "on Monday week"; remarking that he "cannot see any gratification in this Chinese affair being a joint French-English ... I hold with her Ladyship that the less we have to do with such questionable alliances the better."; noting that there was a "very good article" on the disarmament of the French Navy and hoping that "his Grace of Somerset [Edward Adolphus Seymour, 12th Duke of Somerset] & Sydney Herbert will keep their eyes open"; mentioning mutual acquaintances and complaining that Mrs. Wyndham has written him "a very reproachful letter" accusing him of "want of sympathy & for not condoling with her about her father's death"; saying that he has been to see his brother "the Parson", remarking "poor fellow, I think him in a very bad way"; asking what he should do with a packet of letters to her and sending his regards to her family.
