Summary
Apologizing for a postcard she sent; saying "I repent of my post-card. Please - try to divest yourself of any idea of what she is - (as far as that can be possible to you who do read Shakespeare-) & let me try to show you my idea - Then we will - I hope - discuss her after - My task is so great that I want it made easy for me - Thanks for your cordial note - One of the clauses in the Shorter Catechism is that Shakespeare be held to be a dull writer - this his dullest work - & the one best adapted for the stage - & that any actor or actress attempting a grave - still more a tragic part - runs risk of certain damnation here - & probable damnation hereafter. This I learn from my Presbyterian friends - did you know it?" adding, in a postscript, "They have a 'survival" of belief in purgatory as a probable consequence of low comedy - to be endured by the audience here - & by the actors 'hereafter' - It is very interesting."
