Summary
Thanking her for a letter and accompanying enclosure; writing of the weather at Cannes, where it has been sunny and cold, and stating that (his wife) Emily has had a bad cough; asking her to give him an accurate account of the weather in Paris as he had heard that it has been unusually cold, and saying that he has written for an account of the weather in Westmoreland by way of comparison; mentioning that they are expecting Lady Capel and Miss Smythe, promising that "every attention shall be shown to them", and asking if Miss Smythe is any relation to Professor Smythe, Modern History, at Cambridge, who was a "fellow townsman" of George Caldwell; observing that Cannes is "full of English, & a few French", describing the former as a "queer set ... they are generally speaking Scotch Presbyterians - a sect I abhor - narrow minded bigots", and further observing that Cannes is "becoming a large place - & in time will be another Nice."; saying that their plans depend upon his brother, that they will go on to Rome should he go to London near the end of January, and further detailing his family's itinerary for the spring. The letter breaks off in the middle of a sentence asking Madame de Bury how she is and "how the operation succeeded".
