Summary
Saying he heard from Gosse that Henley is in town and suspects that Henley did not receive a letter from Monkhouse with an invitation to dinner the following evening; asking him to reply by return; expressing his pleasure on Henley's being named Editor of the "Magazine of Art" saying "I hope you will long continue!...and that this good fortune may only be a beginning. I have not time to polish my words with colourless compliment so I will just add that I think your ballad a Rachel the very cleverest thing in that way I have ever seen. I thoroughly congratulate you on it;" adding, in two postscripts, "Please don't forget to write by return / A.D. / In awful haste!"
