Summary
Asking for assistance in choosing a dress for an upcoming costume ball; describing her stay in Nice ("a good many young men - making the most of the short time they say they have to live - all preparing to be trampled under foot by the Austria charges - all say war is inevitable"); complaining that the Russians are unable to socialize as the Russian Empress has been unwell and her subjects are not permitted to accept invitations without her approval ("Such a state of things, I've had to have my day submitted to her, on penalty of no Russian otherwise daring to accept."); asking if her "man with his Avignon connection" knows whether someone "calling himself Duc de Gallean-Gadagne" is safe "because he seems inclined to flutter".
