Summary
Informing her that he has received a response from Mr. Peabody of the North American Review regarding her article for that magazine, stating that it is "safe and sound for the January no.", relating Mr. Peabody's words of praise for the piece and quoting him in saying that he "should feel proud to have her for a contributor on such poor terms as I can offer her now and on better if I am able to offer her better"; remarking that she seems to "take much to heart the position of England" and reminding her that she is English "and that other people are not", and that "There was and is something like organised Humbug in the contrast between the present violence and treachery of England to liberal opinion and its tone of inevitable moral superiority." (presumably a reference to British involvement in the Crimean War) and suggesting that England demonstrate "a gracious permission to other nations to exist according to their own notions"; informing her that a copy of Longfellow's Hiawatha has been sent to her and that the author was pleased with her recent article in the Revue des deux mondes.
