Expressing his satisfaction at assisting her in her efforts to find an American publisher for her articles and his admiration for her "exhaustless ardor" as a writer; warning her that (owing to the lack of copyright provisions) American authors must compete with the freely available writings of English authors, and are paid accordingly; recommending the North American Review to her as a periodical of "high reputation"; saying that he has spoken with Mr. (Cornelius Conway) Felton ("to whom I introduced you in Paris") and that he "welcomed with warmth" as a frequent contributor to the magazine in question the proposal that she submit some of her writings on literary subjects; outlining the rate of payment offered by the North American Review; adding that he has contacted his friend (George William) Curtis in New York regarding her prospects for publishing with Harpers Putnam & Co., but that they showed little interest owing to the free availability of the works of European authors; noting that they pay the most for articles on American subjects, that "Putnam says he cannot pay enough to make it worth while and Harper says that for what he liked he would give 5 dollars a page", and that Curtis does not advise her to accept these terms as "That is so much less than he gives our writers."
