Summary
Discussing politics; saying that he has just sketched the following ballad and is sending her the first draft; adding that if he finishes it, he is thinking of sending two or three dozen copies at a press in Dumfries and some to Edinburgh and Ayrshire; requesting her criticism, The kirk's [Lament (deleted)] alarm--a ballad, "Tune, Push about the brisk bowl-- / Orthodox, Orthodox, who believe in John Knox ..." (The kirk of Scotland's Garland--a new song); stating this is the length he has written and whether he continues is uncertain; mentioning that Captain Grose has been through Annandale, Nithsdale, & Galloway in view of commencing another publication and has made his headquarters with his neighbor for the last 2 months; showing his respect and admiration for Captain Grose and that he gave him an itinerary to go through the country, but did not make the introductions through a letter to the Dunlop family to avoid being presumptuous.
