The sketches are not signed. According to Martine Reid (professor of 19th-century French literature), they may have been drawn by the illustrator Edouard Riou or possibly by Guy de Maupassant.
The provenance of this item is unclear. It may have been acquired with the manuscripts of "Boule de Suif" (MA 6658) and "Une Répétition" (MA 6660), part of The Dannie and Hettie Heineman Collection, which was given to the Morgan by the Heineman Foundation in 1977.
Housed with a letter from Flaubert to Maupassant (MA 23019) and a series of notes in Flaubert's hand (MA 23020).
Summary
Consisting of four leaves of lined paper: each side of each leaf contains the name of a different day of the week and an illustration surrounding it in ink and colored pencil. The illustrations depict city and country scenes, a painter's palette, a pianist, and a spider web with spiders. The pages also contain lists of numbers; their meaning is unknown.
