Summary
Telling Knight he had just received a telegram informing him he had been elected Head Master; adding "What shall I first say? first by far that I thank you with all my heart for your unwavered advocacy of my claim : but for you I should not have been successful. I put this very strongly - as I feel too the inadequacy of these words. I feel ashamed to ask more - but it would help Fettes very much, if you could aid me towards getting an intimation made to Cotterill that the choice was between me & a stranger. I am afraid there is a sore feeling - at least amongst his family. His Mother-in-law with her daughters & their families sat next to us yesterday at the Pantomime, & neither to me nor the children did they vouchsafe a look or a word, though I had to shake hands with one of their party...Of course this issue was then unknown - If this spirit affects our relations at Fettes it will be most unhappy...Silence is the only dignified or political course of action for me; I only tell you all for friendship sake."
