Written on mourning stationery from "Upper Eglinton Road / Woolwich / Monday Evening."
Gurney writes in her letter of December 14, 1886 (MA 23198.19) that she saw Rev. Jukes the previous day. Jukes dates this letter Monday evening, which dates the letter to December 13, 1886.
In Gurney's letter to Mrs. Field the following day she identifies "Mrs. S." as Mrs. Sullivan. Emelia Gurney encloses this letter in her letter of December 14th (MA 23198.19).
This letter was acquired with a large collection of letters written to Mr. and Mrs. John W. Field and was previously accessioned MA 3838.

Summary
Sending her "...the lines I referred to this morning, written by Mrs. S. just before her death after a severe surgical operation;" transcribing four six-line stanzas; concluding "When I think of the circumstances under which these lines were written, - the prostration, the pain, and the shadow of imminent death, - I can only bless Him who can thus comfort even in our deepest anguish, and whose grace is still sufficient for us."
