Summary
Relating news of her visit from Kathleen O'Meara, O'Meara's recent biography of Madame Mohl, commenting on the political situation and a Burne-Jones painting; saying "And now dearest Kathleen O'Meara has been spending a fortnight with me & we have indeed talked of you both & realized the cloud that envelopes you - She went to Caroline Stephen for a week & has just returned to me - while there C.E.S. heard from dear Mr. Field so a threefold cord has been tugging at you just now - Kathleen was touched through & through by your exquisitely tender thought budding forth even in your sorrowful anxiety - & reaching to her the adornments & comforts, once your own, that you pictured her needing in America - if, as I much hope she should go there I trust the little change to London & Malvern may be of use to her - She looks very tired - but is very bright & sweeter I think than ever - I think her Madame Mohl quite admirable - so bright & sketchy - just a genre picture - not attempting to give it more importance than its pleasant & rather small subject seems to demand - but yet lovingly pourtraying [sic] all the special characteristics - You will have been taking an interest in our Elections & the exceptional conditions in w'h they leave us - The first Conservative wave in the boroughs was extraordinary & unlooked for - but the Counties with their new Voters have more than compensated what the Liberals have lost in the borough. Still there is not a sufficient majority to give them the required strength & so Parnell is in the position to do what he wills with either side - I have been longing for a coalition of the moderate Liberals like Forster & Goschen with enlightened & liberal Conservatives but I suppose it cannot be & sooner or later we must fall into the hands of Chamberlain. Today I sent you a photo of us - a Burne Jones drawing I love so much in its meaning - 'Love & the Pilgrim.' See what an 'aspero deserto' Love is leading her thro - What thorns had caught her - The wreath of birds that crown Love are I suppose souls delivered - It ought to get to you about by Christmas & goes with embracing love from me;" commenting on the cold weather and relating news of family and friends.
