Summary
Beginning with an excerpt she has copied out from a review which appeared in the Spectator on March 10, 1866 which Greenwell titles "From the Spectator review on Hardys Legends & theories of the Buddhists (Mr. H. appears to be a missionary in Ceylon);" saying, after her transcription, "I copied you this because I think it is such a clear interesting account of where Buddhism is, & awakens so many thoughts in the mind as to its essential difference with Christianity;" referring to beliefs of life and death in western and eastern religions and offering her opinion on how Knight should write on "...the leading world religions - not omitting such things as Fetishism & the dark superstitions of the African tribes, because these ideas have a real hold, & re-appear in other systems in other forms. Make it rich in poetry & legend & illustrate it freely with what travellers & missionaries tell - Then it will be an interesting, rich, useful book. If you think over this, I can give you one or two thoughts that I think might be leading binding threads to run through all - & I could help you a great deal with facts & illustrations. It seems to me there is such a work to be done in this region. To call the attention of the thinking cultivated heart & mind to the heathen world lying in wickedness - & to show how that world is a Kingdom - a unity of darkness - delusion & death;" adding, in a postscript, references to an article in the Spectator on India.
