Summary
Acknowledging her kind enquiry and explaining the Duke's current condition; saying "The Duke had a most severe attack of this bile Influenza which brought on a return of his old complaint the asthma and has now been in bed since the 29th in consequence his legs are most swelled and he is dreadfully heavy of his position without any apparent prospect of being able to change it. He is however thank God moving through by very staid degrees & Dr. Holland says all the natural points are satisfactory. So that with time and patience I trust he will get back but I fear it will be a long time before he recovers the health & spirits he was in before this dreadful disease seized him;" sending love from the Duke and their wishes that she "...will take care of yourself & escape this horrid complaint which seems to spare nobody. I believe the best way is to remain within doors & I am sure the advice given you to do so was the best & the only sure way to avoid it."
