It is not known whether or not this letter is in Montalembert's hand.
A note in pencil on the back of the letter identifies Montalembert's correspondent as the Bishop of Ross, but this has not been confirmed.
The provenance of this letter is not clear, but on the basis of later markings it appears to have been acquired as part of a collection of documents of French royalty.

Summary
Sending his correspondent an article on Ireland from L'Avenir, "a paper of which I am one of the principal editors;" writing that he hopes the piece will demonstrate "my admiration for your people, and [...] my sincere gratitude for the kindness you shewed to me during my visit to your Lordship;" mentioning his recent charitable work "for the cause of the poor famished Irish;" referring to his upcoming trial "for having vindicated the most precious liberty of the Catholic faith in my country" and asking for his Lordship's prayers.
