The author of this two-volume compilation was a trade bookbinder, son of the prominent Brussels binder Joseph-François Dubois d'Enghien (1841-1923). He took over his father's business ca. 1918 and formed a partnership with the finisher Edmond Dooms in 1923. As a scholar and expert on the subject of bookbinding and binders, Hector Dubois d'Enghien wrote a history of bookbinding in Belgium, published in 1954, and titled "Le reliure en Belgique".

Volumes contain biographical notes by Dubois d'Enghien on binders, printers, and collectors active before 1800 outside of Belgium; volume I illustrated throughout with sketches, rubbings, and inserted clipped illustrations of bindings and binding designs and ornaments. Entries for individuals are arranged alphabetically, and a list of the names of those included in Dubois d'Enghien's manuscript is provided on folios 24-33 of volume II.
