Notes
Timothy Matlack was an American politician, soldier, and brewer. Among other roles he held during the Revolutionary War period and afterwards, he served on the committees that drafted the Pennsylvania state constitution and he was a delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1780. He was also appointed clerk to the secretary of the Second Continental Congress, Charles Thomson, in May 1775, and in that capacity he may have copied out the Declaration of Independence on parchment for its eventual signing. This indenture appears to be in his hand.
The John Bartram who has signed the indenture may be the early American botanist John Bartram (1699-1777).
