Summary
Telling him that having received his telegram, he has only one thing to say to him: Do what you want. But don't speak to him anymore about exhibitions if Rosenberg doesn't want to see these paintings. It would have been better if they hadn't discussed them at all. An exhibition is or is not a necessity for de Staël, but perhaps it is something else for Rosenberg. Rosenberg should not have agreed about this matter by letter a month earlier and then withdrew the offer over a matter like a date. De Staël says that the paintings have been there for 3 weeks, but Rosenberg hasn't given any orders about them. He says that for him [de Staël], it's a simple matter. His duty is to try to prevent Rosenberg from making a mistake, but all things taken into consideration, it barely concerns de Staël. The works are Rosenberg's now, and Rosenberg can do what he likes with them. And the ones that are there [in New York] can stay there, or he'll gladly give them to Jacques Dubourg. (in postscript) What clients think or don't think is of no importance to him concerning the pace at which he works. All they need to do is look at the paintings.
