Summary
Describing his father's final hours; saying "I could not have supposed, that I could have given pleasure from this scene of misery but the episode of yesterday was I assure you most touching - No change - nor hope tho, the strength the King & the vitality of the Royal Family may prolong the struggle to many hours. I can conceive nothing so disagreeable as the situation of the Duke of Wellington this Evening - indeed it will be like a Funeral Feast - The King did not see the Duke of Cumberland tonight - as He was at that time oppressed & I hope the D. of Sussex will not come down - as probably he might be no more successful - The King has shown all day great consciousness - When taking some potted chicken a little bit fell on his lap - Mary picked it up & put it on the table - He said give it me for Luck - / 9 o'clock / The King just sent for me & put the Baton of Office into my hand and said 'Heir Loom" - His mind is as fine & as clear as ever it was - Poor Augusta just fainted on the Sofa near to me - Good God when is all this misery to cease - / 11 o clock / I have reason to fear for the worst - I dont think the King will see the morning - D. of Sussex comes down - I dont know if he stays."
