Wishing her a very happy birthday; saying "...I cannot look forward to the 23rd of this month without repeating what I was sure you are well aware of, of my constant affectionate good wishes that you may see many many returns of the 23rd & that you my dearest may enjoy every happiness this world can afford - I wish I was with you that I might say all my heart dictates to me upon the occasion;" thanking her for the gift of the game and relating news of family and friends; adding "I am at times suffering from my eyes which prevents my reading by candle light & is very distressing to me as I prefer'd my Book to going into Society - I am now forc'd into the latter for I cannot sit still & do nothing;" adding more news of friends and saying "The newspapers have announc'd yr arrival here - every body enquires most kindly after you.
