The Duke of York suffered from dropsy from July 1826 and died in London on 5 January 1827.

Expressing her happiness at knowing she is safely at Tunbridge as she worried over their journey in the bad weather; relating social news from Brighton; adding "You dont mention the dear Baby I hope poor little Soul she is going on well I am glad to hear your Eye is better I hope it really is so for I have not much reliance upon what you tell me about yourself as I know you always make the best of it...I have heard this morning about the poor Duke [of York] alas alas his case is deplorable He was to have been here today but he cannot leave Town or his Medical advisers.
