Summary
Concerning examination subjects for the Spence Bursary examination; saying "I return the proposed subjects for examination at the Spence Bursary competition - approved by Butcher & Chrystal in their respective departments. Sellar, as the enclosed explains, thinks the Latin programme not strong enough for men at that stage. Perhaps you will consider what he says, & strengthen the Latin demands in some degree accordingly. Otherwise we are agreed;" adding, in a postscript, "I was asked how many days & hours in each day, are to be given to the Spence Ex'n. Here, for our ordinary Bursaries, the examinations cover two (or three) days - six hours each day. / Latin 3 hours / Greek 3 hours / Math 3." .
