Summary
Describing the practice at Edinburgh University "...in the matter of our representatives of the Senators in the University Court. Since the office was founded, in 1859, we have had only two representatives. Sir R. Christison was elected in 1859, & reelected at the end of each term of four years, till 1877. In that year he resigned, & I had the honour of being appointed his successor, which office I now hold. The Assessor with us has thus been for 18 years a Professor in the Medical Faculty, & for 3 years a Professor in Arts. I don't know that we thought much about Faculties in electing, & the long reign of Christison is very unlikely to be repeated in the case of any of his successors;" discussing the remaining parts of his volume on Berkeley to be delivered to the printer; adding "I am working at these, & hope to have them in by Xmas - But the whole needs much revision, & some additions & subtractions, after I have it all before me in type - as I hope during the Xmas holiday. Descartes is very good, looked at as a biographical picture, but the philosophy is sometimes slight. Still it is probably better to have that sort of thing to start with."
