Summary
Concerning the proofs for his volume on Berkeley; saying "I have proofs of the three opening chapters of the 'Berkeley' from Blackwood, & I suppose you have duplicates. My bad writing, & interlining has led the printers into blunders which make some sentences unintelligible - all my fault - as I see on a hasty glance. I hope to give the printers three additional chapters early next week, thus completing the 'First Part', [illegible] 80 pages. The Second Part - about 70 pages or more - should be in their hands before the end of this month. The Third Part (about 50 pages, I think) should all be in type by Christmas - & all, with the help of the Christmas recess, out of my hands before the classes reassemble in January - if my health keeps as good as it is. So I hope the vol. may be your January one, to appear about the end of that month - Descartes appearing before or about Christmas, I fancy. With the proposed binding, & in most cases I hope from their contents, your Series sh'd have no Difficulty in keeping the rival one at a distance behind - especially if you can issue a monthly or even a bimonthly vol. regularly in 1881, & get the vols. discussed, in 'Blackwood' & elsewhere. We must think about the best portrait of Berkeley. You will give me any suggestions for amendments, as you read my proof. I have pressed on, perhaps too fast, - to obey your commands."
