Summary
Thanking him for the book and for the kind words he wrote on the opening page; accepting his offer to contribute to a project on which Knight is working; saying "The Programme seems admirable, & we must all join to make the execution as good as possible; interpreting the philosophy of modern Europe so as to make it an intelligible elevating influence to ordinary English readers. As to Locke or Berkeley I should wish, as much as I can to suit your views or arrangements;" relating his recent trip to England to do research on Locke saying "My mind is thus more alive about Locke than about Berkeley, just now;" cautioning that he may be hampered in how much he is able to use his Locke material by his arrangement with the Clarendon Press but that he might be able to add something on Berkeley if he could combine it with what he is writing on him that is due in 1882; commenting on other academics and clergy who may be able to offer material; concluding that he plans to visit Rydal Lodge in September and would welcome an opportunity to see Knight.
