Summary
Concerning a vacant Chair at St. Andrews; recommending two of his students and Mr. Hastie for the vacant position; adding "I think, however, that Hastie is preeminently the man for the position. He has immeasurably more knowledge of theology in general and especially of German theology than anyone else whom I know; and he would assuredly be a most successful teacher. I shall consider it a very great favour if you can influence any of those referred to in your letter on his behalf. I believe you could do no better service to St. Andrews;" asking if his understanding is correct that the St. Mary's Principalship will "...cease on the death of Dr. Cunningham."
