Summary
Concerning the Gifford Lectureship; saying "Just a word to say that the Senators here will on Saturday first make nominations to the Gifford Lectureship, and that it is almost certain that an appointment will be made at the meeting on the 28th of this month. I am more sanguine as to Stirling's chances than when I wrote you before. Although I am in favour of Stirling if St. Andrews were to elect him before the election here took place I would not think it would be courteous or proper in Edinburgh University to tempt him away from you. I hope, therefore, our meeting for election may be before yours."
