On the recommendation of Adam Smith to Lord Chesterfield, Ferguson accepted the position of tutor to Lord Chesterfield's ward, Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl of Chesterfield (1755-1815) with an agreement that he would receive an annuity of £400 during a tour of Europe and £200 for life following the tour.
James Chalmer was a London attorney and Ferguson's agent.
