Summary
Apologizing that "...our lunch with William Empson never came off. I take it however that he has applied for the Regius Professorship. At least; I met auntie from Manchester, who by the way has just got herself a professorship in Cambridge, a few days ago, and she was quoting him as a favorite. Hsiao Ch'ien seemed quite optimistic too - I hear, incidentally, you are meeting him some time this week. Give him my love : he is rather a dear, but I cannot help feeling there is something wrong - he is so infinitely gullible."
