Summary
The woman took the dog (see previous 2 letters). From what she understands, the dog isn't going to have a master but rather a slave. She says that the love of animals turns us into idiots. Sometimes she says to herself, "No more dogs!", which she says means that a good dog is sleeping inside her somewhere. She says that her only real cerebral lovers were the great painters--her peers, as she says without modesty. It's for that reason that she doesn't associate with them in person. She's glad to know that they're in good health and is delighted about their successes as painters. She saw Jos [Hessel] in his gallery, and Mr. Pacquement was there. She's read Admiral Richard Byrd's Alone. Paris is sad--children are still being evacuated. She's been reading in the evening, La vie des saints and the Bible--the book of Ecclesiastes. She says that distance will help them learn more about each other.
