Summary
Concerning the carriage accident with the dog and the death of Jane Carlyle; saying "Count Reichenbach fetched away the poor little dog yesterday and they are very glad to have it & will set great store by it. It was not much hurt. The horse had struck against it with his foot. I feel very thankful that it was her poor little obedient dog wh was accidentally the cause of our great sorrow for it might have been a friend who had startled her or who had unwittingly annoyed her & caused the same result & there [illegible] a life of self reproach w'd have been caused - it w'd have been an aggravation of our grievous loss wh cd hardly have been borne - poor little 'Livey'(?) has been a great pleasure to her since she had come her."
