The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).
Summary
Thanking her for her kindness; saying "I take the liberty of writing a few lines to thank you for the kindness you have shown to such an unworthy creature as I have been to leave such a good home and I thank you for taking the trouble you have to come and see me who am not worthy of such a kind benefactress I hope madam that you will forgive me for I am very sorry for what I have done[.]"
