Notes
Dickens gives only "Friday Night" for the date of writing. Based on the contents and signature, Storey and Fielding estimate that the letter was written during the summer of 1848. See the published correspondence, cited below, for additional information.
Written from "Devonshire Terrace."
The published correspondence does not record an envelope with this letter. However, one is housed with it; it has a red wax seal and is addressed to "Miss Coutts / Stratton Street / Piccadilly."
The letter is part of a collection, MA 1352, which consists of letters from Charles Dickens to the Baroness, to her companion Hannah (Meredith) Brown, or the latter's husband, William Brown; with 70 letters written by others to Miss Coutts or to Dickens in his capacity as her unofficial almoner; and a few others. See the collection-level record for more information.
